For local businesses, Christmas is the biggest and last opportunity they have to boost sales at the end of the year, so they are fine-tuning their strategies to ensure a successful year-end.
Sales have already begun with purchases of decorative items, and they expect to continue at a good pace with the sale of technological devices, men’s grooming products, toys, and games designed for family enjoyment.
According to data shared by the Puerto Rico Retail Trade Association (ACDET), the season got off to a positive start with high demand for Christmas decorations since October. The pace of sales has been sustained with the start of special promotions and discounts leading up to Black Friday, reported ACDET Executive Director Lymaris Otero.
As the pre-Black Friday “Early Bird Sale” promotions continue, the most sought-after toy categories are emerging, with consoles, scooters, bicycles, and skateboards leading the sales. Meanwhile, large-format televisions and appliances are the top sellers for the home.
The executive added that there is a strong trend among consumers to seek out electronic devices and phone accessories, such as smartwatches and headphones.
Otero emphasized that retailers anticipate a season driven by competitive prices, early promotions, and optimistic consumers.
“We expect sustained activity throughout December, with retailers adapting to new shopping habits that integrate the physical and digital experience. Everything points to a good Christmas season, both for businesses and consumers,” Otero stated.
The president of Farmacias Aliadas (Allied Pharmacies), Camille Lebrón, explained that pharmacies, beyond medications, offer a variety of gift options.
She indicated that pharmacies have a diverse selection of toys for children and entertainment for all ages to enjoy as a family, such as puzzles, board games, and remote-controlled cars.
“We are focusing on a wide variety of toys for the whole family at good prices, knowing that budgets have changed, so we are catering to all areas,” Lebrón commented.
When asked by EL VOCERO about possible setbacks with the entry of products and items to the Island, the executive stated that they had experienced delivery delays at the beginning, when the issue of tariffs arose, but they had to adapt. She recounted that they managed to obtain a variety of products and negotiate with suppliers to be able to meet customer demand.
Christmas sales begin
Lebrón indicated that the pharmacy group he leads is also reporting sales of Christmas-themed items.
“We’re already seeing Christmas sales. In our stores, we have a wide variety of decorations, trees, and lights, and we’re starting to see consumer activity in these categories,” Lebrón explained.
Grooming Products on the Rise
Although gifts for men are generally shirts, cologne, and underwear, men’s grooming products have become an increasingly popular option.
Rosaura Batista has seen sales of these types of products increase since October at her establishment, La Trovadora Barber & Beauty Supply. According to her experience, this is because men want to look good, healthy, and have a fresh style.
“We’re seeing more and more people interested in hair care, specifically men. Men are increasingly looking for products that are healthy and have beneficial properties,” Batista commented. He indicated that customers are showing interest in gels, beard oils, and aftershave liquids.
