Sisley
Welcome to Robb Recommends, a regular series in which our editors and contributors endorse something they’ve tried and loved—and think will change your life for the better.
There’s a strange dichotomy happening in men’s grooming. Even though it sometimes seems that there’s a new brand launching every week, the segment—especially at the higher end—can still feel thoroughly underserved. What’s a guy to do when he’s graduated from premium, barbershop-inspired cleansers and serums but isn’t ready to take on the highly fragranced luxury goop designed for our sisters, mothers, wives, and girlfriends?
Sisley recently launched a group of grooming products laser-targeted to fit into that very niche. The French house’s new Sisleÿum for Men line includes four products—a gel cleanser, a hydrating toner, and two moisturizers—tailored to guys’ skin in ways that feel thoughtful, not merely masculinized. Each of the products is formulated with bioactive ingredients derived from kinkeliba, a West African shrub that is often used to make tea. The plant’s antioxidants go to work alongside tried-and-true men’s skincare ingredients to soothe and strengthen the skin with continued use.
I’ve been using the line for about three weeks now, and what I’ve been most impressed by is how seamlessly they’ve fit into my routine. In the mornings, I use the cleanser and toner, then apply a vitamin C serum before using the moisturizer and sunscreen. In the evenings, I apply a prescription tretinoin after cleansing and toning, and seal everything in with the moisturizer. I’ve been fortunate enough not to experience any of the irritation that can sometimes accompany new products, and I look forward to using them every time I stand in front of my sink.
Below, a closer look at what makes each piece of the new line worth recommending.
This refreshing cleanser, like the other products in the line, has a light, fresh scent thanks to its use of white sage. It also uses plant-derived glycerin for a dose of hydration. It leaves the skin clean but not stripped, helping to keep your barrier strong for any actives that you might use later in your routine.
In an indication of just how thoughtfully this line was produced, it has not one but two moisturizers. This one is meant for combination and oily skin, so it’s the one I’ve been using over the past few weeks. It combines deeply nourishing ingredients, including algae extract, and white willow leaf for a gentle exfoliation that can help combat congested skin.
